It began in 1981 with the introduction of the AAdvantage program from American Airlines. Frequent flyer points were given in order to reward frequent customers for their loyalty. The frequent flyers were found by researching customers who would go online for flight bookings. They were offered membership to AAdvantage. Next, United Airlines followed with a program called Mileage Plus. Later, the very same year TWA and Delta Airlines came out with their programs for frequent flyer points. Now, Southwest Airline is also in the mix. All these airlines are now competing in the market for customers, one trying to offer a better deal than the next one.
